Air Purifier Review - Living Air Classic XL-15

Alpine puts out some great air purifiers, each for a different purpose. The one I like is the Living Air Classic XL-15.

The Living Air Classic is an ionic air purifier, and it works well. It has a variable setting, and this probably it’s best selling point. It can cover twenty square feet to 3000 square feet, making it ideal for most applications. The nice thing is that it was designed to be on constantly, and, even at full power, it can barely be heard; the hum it produces quickly fades into the background. The energy efficiency is also nice, as it uses the same power as a 30-watt light bulb.

As it is a self-contained unit, it can be quickly moved from one location to another. This allows you the option to move it along with you as you go from room-to-room, or place it in areas long enough to purify the area, and then move it back to its usual spot. If you do decide to move it, the variable setting really comes into its own. You can put it down to a minimum setting for general use, and then crank it up to take care of problem areas (such as finding a moldy spot; you can dry out a small spot in about half-an-hour). Great for when the your kids leave their wet clothes in that forgotten corner and you find them, when the guys prep the fish and forget to clean up, and will even help take care of the odor left behind “accidents”.

It does have the usual problem of ionic air purifiers: It prematurely wears down rubber and plastic, cutting the lifespan of individual products to about two-thirds of normal, with increasing brittleness evident after two-three month. The best of dealing with that problem is to keep them in rooms where the air purifier isn’t, or just don’t use the purifier in that room beyond when it is absolutely needed.

Otherwise, the unit is a very nice piece of work. With an easy-to-replace fan and ozone plate, an optional lint screen, and excellent customer support, the Living Air Classic XL-15is an excellent buy!
